After Bentley ended support for Navigator v8i, Bentley is missing a desktop-based review tool that supports dynamic review of Openplant DGN files stored in a ProjectWise Environment.
While working in a File Based system, it is essential to have a tool that can quickly reference, and detach files, save review templates of Model files, and perform review functions of EC data developed using OPM. Other functions involve verifying coordinates and measuring components.
While Bentley claims this is all possible using iTwin Design Review, there are several limitations associated to this.
Users cannot view or reference custom configuration of DGN files dynamically.
Users cannot instantaneously access data stored in a DGN file. They must wait for a synchronization for the iModel to be updated.
An iModel creates duplicate data, and it is possible for the DGN file to be out of sync with the iModel. This will create issues for stake holders.
Users cannot work with multiple windows/screens. The iTwin solution forces users to work within the confines of a browser window, which can get crowded with dialogs, properties windows, menus, etc.
Users cannot save their specific configuration of 3D models they require to view/verify.
There are speeds issues while working with models hosted on the cloud, especially with users working with projects from a global user base. A project hosted in North America will be slow to access for a user in India.
A desktop solution would allow independent users to access and review models stored in PW without depending on an Admin user to develop and manage iModels in the cloud.
This is a great idea. In project commercial space today's environment demands fast response, even instantaneous reaction to plant design. This tool fits forward thinking required to stay competitive in today's market.
I completely agree, the old Navigator supported several business functions that are no longer available with the Design Review portal. Our business has begun evaluating other suite of products as we are continuously seeing Bentley drop functionality for desktop-based functions. The cloud is great, but it has its limitations, and we would like to see Bentley improve their desktop products.
I support this request 100%.
The old Bentley Navigator was one of the best review tools as you could document review notes in the session and then print to PDF at the end of the meeting to record all the comments. It was easy to use and clients could get access to the license at minimal cost.
At the moment you need to spend a large amount of money to get access to the PlantSight tools for review, this will be a great tool to bring back and let smaller companies also benefit from reviews.
Alternatives such as Navis does not bring the intelligence we have spent hours at adding into the OPM models to the review.
Please Bentley, bring back desktop review software like Bentley Navigator.
It would be great to have a desktop-based tool for review.
Cloud based tool is okay, but it has its own limitation as Sujaan has highlighted.
Thank you
