user prefs get broken once in a while. It is recommended to delete them when awkward stuff happens. This happens in microStation et. al. since decades (the cause being in the dark) But you loose all your beloved GUI settings that you accumulated over a period of time.
I would like to see a /history/backup/repair functionality for the prefs that would not require you to start from scratch when the issue occurs. It should at least allow you to pick a earlier version of your GUI from a backup version. This prefs-backup should be created on a regular (say monthly? configurable) basis.
I recommend to store all settings of the user preferences in an XML file (keep current user interface). This is a much more robust way to store this kind of information, it can be backed up easily and is transparent to users. Information such as location of opened tool boxes, or key-in history may still be stored in binary format.
