Importing and exporting step files in microstation is hit or miss at best. For best results we have to import step files into autocad save them to dwg and then import the dwg into microstation. We also have better results exporting to dwg and then to step files when this is necessary.

Frequently vendors and suppliers refuse to share or work with 3D dwg data and will only work with step files. The step translations worked "okay" in v8i not great but something went wrong when connect was built... (maybe something with moving to the Parasolid over ACIS kernal?) I don't know all the issues but I know it doesn't work all of the time and it would be helpful if it did.
