Autodesk Civil 3D (for its label objects) has a property called Mask = True/False and a property: "Margin" of the text, so if you add a text with Mask=true then appears a mask on patterns or other elements in the drawing.
Maybe this property: "Mask" and "Margin of the text" could be new properties for the text style.
Currently you have this in the Dimension Style:
Left Margin
Lower Margin
The Text Style Background is already available to do that (especially when set to the BG color from the color table).
