Element templates come along when using copy or merge from master with references.

If you copy from a reference or merge to master from a reference the element templates will get dropped. The symbology stays the same, but the element template will change to none. My idea is to correct this so that the elements that are copied Are merged from master of a reference will retain their element template Properties.
